I Made the Viral Dot Cakes at Home and They are So Easy and Good

viral dot cake with a star design

Viral Dot Cake but make it Asian and even cuter

The viral Dot Cake trend is basically cupcakes covered in extra sprinkles and I’m all for it! As someone who loves colorful treats, this trend really caught my eye because it’s fun, beginner-friendly, and ready in under one hour. The cakes bake directly in ramekins, which means less steps and LESS DISHES for you to clean! If you love small-batch baking and the aesthetics of rainbow sprinkle slimes, this adorable dessert is for you except this version is actually edible! :) I even made extras as gifts because it was just so easy.

Here, we’re making three viral dot cakes, so if you need more, double or triple the recipe!

This base vanilla cake recipe is perfect for trying different flavors. For this version, I added black sesame for its nutty, toasty flavor and paired with a creamy vanilla buttercream. Feel free to swap the black sesame for matcha powder, cocoa powder, or just keep it as a vanilla cake. I used nonpareil style sprinkles to keep it closer to the trend but if you don’t like the texture of those, you can switch it with jimmy style sprinkles for a softer bite.

Finally, I gave it a spin with a star cutout shape, because you’re a star!

The viral Dot Cake trend is basically cupcakes loaded with extra sprinkles, and I'm all for it! It's fun, beginner-friendly, and ready in under an hour — the cakes bake right in ramekins, so fewer steps and fewer dishes to clean! If you love small-batch baking and the look of rainbow sprinkle slime, this one's for you, except it's actually edible. :)

This vanilla base is perfect for experimenting: here I added black sesame for a nutty, toasty flavor and paired it with creamy vanilla buttercream. Swap in matcha or cocoa, or keep it plain vanilla. I used nonpareil sprinkles to match the trend, but jimmies work too if you prefer a softer bite.

Variations

  • If you’d like to make cute designs like the star in the feature image, you can use a cookie cutter and place it on top of the frosted cake. Then pour the sprinkles on top of the frosting instead of around the cookie cutter. Slowly remove the cutter to reveal a cute cutout shape within the sprinkles!
  • Make it whipped cream frosting instead of buttercream! Replace the buttercream with whipped cream topping and dip it in sprinkles. You have to eat this as soon as you dip it in sprinkles to prevent color bleeding. You can also frost first and then dip in sprinkles closer to serving time
